Overview

SNS is moving to an SRS-based domain registry. As part of the upgrade process, existing .sol domains will transition to .sns, and eligible existing holders will receive matching new .sol domains in the new registry.

The rollout happens in three phases:

Phrase 1: Transition to .sns

Existing domains will be displayed and resolved as .sns. During this phase, the current .sol name continues to work as an alias.

For example, if you own yourname.sol, it will transition to yourname.sns. While alias support is active, sending funds to yourname.sol or yourname.sns resolves to the same wallet address. Both domains will resolve to the same address.

Phrase 2: Temporary .sol pause and the new .sol domain airdrop

Support for .sol resolution will be temporarily paused while SNS migrates to the SRS-based registry. Eligible holders will automatically receive matching upgraded .sol domains through an airdrop. During this phase, the new .sol domains will not resolve or appear in wallets, apps, or other services; activation will occur in the next phase. Airdrop eligibility and delivery status can be checked at migration.sns.id.

Phrase 3: Activation of the new .sol domain

Once the community and ecosystem are ready, the new SRS-based .sol domains will be activated. They will progressively become available for transactions and display across wallets, apps, and other services as partners update their SNS SDK integrations.

MIGRATION FAQ

The Upgrade

1. What is changing for me?

• Your existing .sol domain becomes your .sns domain. For example, yourname.sol becomes yourname.sns.
• Start using your .sns name for transactions and profile identity.
• Your existing records, subdomains, and domain functionality remain intact.
• If eligible, you will receive a matching new .sol domain automatically and at no cost.
• The new .sol domain will become usable later, once it is activated during the final phase of the upgrade.
• After the upgrade, you will have both yourname.sns and yourname.sol.

2. Why is this upgrade happening?

The upgrade moves the new generation of .sol domains to the Solana Record Service (SRS), a public program built specifically for domain names, with an architecture intended to support resolution beyond Web3 in future.

This gives .sol a more flexible foundation for broader distribution, interoperability, and future growth. Resolution outside Web3 is not available today and would depend on a separate process that is decided by third parties.

3. Why couldn’t the existing program simply be upgraded?

The current registry is built on SPL Name Service, a shared public program that supports many applications beyond SNS and thus cannot be modified to meet the specific requirements of the next generation of .sol domains.

Building a new registrar on SRS makes it possible to design .sol for what comes next—unlocking the capabilities, flexibility, and reach needed for its future.

4. Do I need to do anything to receive the matching new .sol domains?

No. The upgrade is automatic. You do not need to claim anything, sign a transaction, or pay any fees.

Before the pause slot Your .sol domain will continue to work normally. However, we recommend using yourname.sns instead of yourname.sol to send and receive funds.

After the pause slot .sol resolution will be paused; use yourname.sns to send and receive funds by domain name. Your domain ownership and records will remain intact. Eligible wallets will automatically receive the upgraded .sol domain.

Beware of scams We will never ask you to claim a domain, verify your wallet, or pay a migration fee. Any message asking you to do so is a scam.

5. What happens to SNS after the upgrade?

SNS will continue building Web3 identity infrastructure on Solana. We also support the Solana Foundation’s application for the .sol generic top-level domain (gTLD) through ICANN.

6. Will this affect all users or only some?

The upgrade affects all current .sol domain holders.

However, only eligible holders will receive new .sol domain(s) airdrop. Domains registered before the registration pause are included in the snapshot and may be eligible for the airdrop. See “What determines eligibility?” for details.

7. What is the timeline?

• August 17: Registration of .sol domains pause, and a snapshot of which wallet holds each domain is taken shortly afterwards. Only domains registered before the pause are included in the snapshot. Once the snapshot is finalized, you will be able to check your eligibility on the migration.sns.id. No new domains can be registered until registrations reopen.

• Early to mid-September: New registrations reopen under .sns. At this stage, existing .sol domains transition to .sns. For example, yourname.sol will be displayed and resolved as yourname.sns. Both yourname.sol and yourname.sns resolve to the same wallet address in supported applications, so either can be used to send funds.

• Late September to early October: Eligible holders receive matching new .sol domains via airdrop, delivered on-chain. You can check your delivery status at migration.sns.id. The domains will appear in wallets and apps as support is enabled.

• Mid to late October: .sol resolution will be temporarily paused in official SNS SDKs. From this point, existing SPL Name Service domains will resolve as .sns domains only. Wallets, apps, and other services will transition as they update their SNS SDK integrations.

• Q4 2026 – Q1 2027: The new SRS-based .sol domains begin activating. Support for resolution, transactions, and display will roll out progressively across wallets, apps, and other services as partners add support.

All dates are targets and may change. Any updates to the timeline will be announced through official SNS channels.

.sol and .sns

8. What is the difference between .sol and .sns?

.sns is the new suffix for your existing SPL Name Service domain. Your current domain transitions from .sol to .sns and retains its ownership, records, primary domain setting, and subdomains.

The upgraded .sol is a separate, new domain built on the Solana Record Service (SRS) which was specifically designed for Web3 use and compatibility with the traditional web. Eligible holders will receive a matching .sol domain—for example, a holder of yourname.sns will receive yourname.sol. At launch, new SRS-based .sol will not support domain records, primary domain settings, or subdomains.

9. When will my domain start showing as .sns?

Your domain will begin appearing as .sns as wallets, apps, and services update their SNS integrations—primarily from August through September, based on current targets.

There is no single date on which your domain's display changes. During the transition, some services may show your name as .sol while others show it as .sns; both may refer to the same existing SNS domain. Your domain’s ownership, records, primary domain setting, and subdomains remain unchanged.

sns.id will display your domain as .sns after domain registrations reopen in September.

10. Will both domains have the same functionality?

.sns continues to support the full SNS feature set, including records, primary domains, subdomains, and sub-registrars.

New .sol domains will launch without these configuration and subdomain-management features. Both .sns and .sol can be resolved for payments and Web3 identity as third-party wallets and apps add support. Availability and display may vary by service during the transition.

11. Can I still send and receive funds with my .sol domain?

Yes. You can continue using your .sol domain to receive funds until .sol resolution is temporarily paused at slot 452_825_395, expected in mid to late October.

To keep receiving payments at the address your domain resolves to today, use your corresponding .sns domain. Your .sns domain keeps the same records and can be used for payments in wallets and apps that support .sns.

.sol resolution is intended to be restored in a future update. Once restored, .sol domains will resolve based on the ownership of the new .sol domains.

12. Will my .sol domain stop working?

Your current .sol domain will continue to resolve until .sol resolution is temporarily paused at slot 452_825_395, expected in mid to late October. During that pause, .sol domains will not resolve for payments or other supported uses.

Your corresponding .sns domain will preserve the records associated with your current domain and can be used instead in wallets and apps that support .sns.

.sol resolution is intended to return in a future update. At that point, .sol names will resolve according to ownership of the new .sol domains, rather than the prior .sol domain configuration.

13. Why is the upgrade happening in phases?

The transition involves more than moving domains. Wallets, apps, and other services need time to update their integrations and add support for .sns and the new SRS-based .sol domains.

The timeline also provides notice for domain holders, users, and projects that rely on existing .sol resolution, giving them time to update links, payment instructions, and integrations.

This phased approach helps ensure a safe, coordinated transition while the new SRS-based .sol domain system is introduced.

14. After the upgrade, should I use .sns or .sol?

Use .sns for continuity with your existing domain setup. Your corresponding .sns domain retains its existing records and supports the full SNS feature set, including primary domains, subdomains, and sub-registrars.

Use the new .sol domain if you want to participate in the new SRS-based .sol domain system, which is designed to support broader resolution capabilities. Any resolution outside Web3 would depend on a separate ICANN process led by a third party, over which SNS has no control and for which there is no committed timeline.

15. How can I register a .sol domain after registrations pause?

You will not be able to register new .sol domains after the registration pause. When registrations reopen, you can register .sns domains only, and .sns registrations will not qualify for the matching new .sol domain airdrop.

New .sol registrations may return in the future with web2 support. Please refer to our official channels for future availability updates.

Snapshot and Eligibility

16. What is the snapshot, and when is it taken?

The snapshot is an on-chain record of which wallet holds each existing top-level .sol domain. It is used to determine which holders qualify to receive matching new .sol domains in the SRS-based registry.

The snapshot is expected to be taken during the second half of August. Only domains registered before the registration pause on August 17 (target) will be included. Once the snapshot is finalized, you will be able to check your eligibility at migration.sns.id.

17. What is the registration pause?

The registration pause (expected Aug 17) is a temporary halt on new .sol domain registrations before the snapshot is taken. Only .sol domains registered before the pause are eligible for the matching new .sol domain airdrop.

When registrations reopen in September, new domains can be registered as .sns only. New .sns registrations will not qualify for the airdrop.

18. What determines eligibility for the matching new .sol domain airdrop?

Eligibility is determined by inclusion in the snapshot. Every .sol domain registered before the registration pause is expected to be included and eligible for an upgraded .sol domain airdrop.

We may exclude a domain from the snapshot, or be unable to deliver a matching new .sol domain, where that is necessary to comply with applicable law or with a court, regulatory or law-enforcement order, where the domain has been credibly reported in connection with a scam or hack, or where a technical failure prevents delivery. If you believe your domain has been excluded in error, contact us through the official channels below.

Airdrops are delivered according to the first applicable rule below:

• Listed on sns.id or Magic Eden: The airdrop is sent to the wallet that listed the domain, not the marketplace escrow wallet. This applies to tokenized and non-tokenized domains. You do not need to delist before the snapshot.
• Held in a sub-registrar: The airdrop is sent to the sub-registrar owner, not the escrow wallet.
• Tokenized but not listed: The airdrop is sent to the wallet holding the tokenized domain.
• All other domains: The airdrop is sent to the wallet holding the domain.

Review your domain’s status before the snapshot to understand where the airdrop will be delivered.

19. My domain is tokenized as an NFT. Who will receive the new .sol domain?

The wallet holding the tokenized domain at the snapshot receives the upgraded .sol domain.

If the NFT is in your wallet at the snapshot, the upgraded domain will be delivered to that same wallet.

20. What happens if my domain is held by an exchange or custodian?

The upgraded .sol domain will be sent to the wallet holding your domain at the snapshot.

If an exchange or custodian manages that wallet, the airdrop will be delivered there. Access to the upgraded domain will then depend on the exchange or custodian’s policies and processes.

If possible, move your domain to a wallet you control before August 17.

21. How do I check my eligibility status?

You can check your eligibility status at migration.sns.id. The page will show exactly what your wallet is expected to receive.

The eligibility page will launch after the snapshot is finalized.

22. Can domains be traded or transferred during or after the upgrade?

.sns domains remain tradable on sns.id throughout the upgrade and afterwards. New .sol domains can be tokenized and traded on third-party marketplaces once supported.

Note: for a short period after SRS-based resolution is enabled, apps and wallets may only resolve SRS-based .sol domains if they point to the same target as the corresponding .sns domain. If you plan to use an SRS-based .sol domain to receive funds, avoid trading or transferring either it or its corresponding .sns domain separately, as mismatched targets may prevent resolution.

Airdrop eligibility is based on which wallet holds the domain at the snapshot — buying a legacy .sol domain afterward does not transfer eligibility. Check your status at migration.sns.id.

The Airdrop

23. When will I receive the new .sol domains?

Eligible wallets will receive their new .sol domains in late September to early October.

You can check your eligibility and delivery status at migration.sns.id.

Resolution support and in-app display will not be available immediately after the airdrop. These features will be enabled during the final phase of the upgrade (Q4 2026 - Q1 2027, target).

24. Do I need to claim my airdropped .sol domain, sign any transactions, or pay any fees?

No. Your matching new .sol domain will be delivered automatically. You do not need to claim it, sign a transaction, or pay any fees.

Be cautious of scams. We will never ask you to verify your wallet or pay any airdrop fee.

25. How can I confirm that I received my new .sol domains?

You can check your airdrop status at migration.sns.id.

Your new .sol domains will also appear in supported wallets and apps once new .sol resolution is enabled in a future update.

Wallets and Apps

26. Will my wallet or marketplace support .sns and the new .sol domains?

Support will roll out over the next few months. We are working closely with major wallets and marketplaces to enable .sns and new .sol domains.

Supported apps will be listed at migration.sns.id as they become available.

27. Why does my wallet or app still show my old domain name?

Each app updates on its own schedule. Until support is available, your app may show your previous .sol name instead of .sns, or fail to resolve a .sns domain. This does not affect your domain ownership.

Check sns.id for the correct status, and follow your wallet or app’s official channels for its update timeline.

28. Is there a developer guide for the update?

Developer documentation, including SDK references and migration guidance, is available at dev.sns.id.

Ownership and Domain Configurations

29. Will my one-time purchase change after the upgrade?

There are no renewal fees today. That may change if .sol becomes an ICANN top-level domain, and we would share details in advance.

30. Are non-English or emoji domains supported?

Yes. Non-English and emoji domains will continue to work as .sns domains on Web3.

If your domain is included in the snapshot, you will also receive the matching upgraded .sol domain.

31. What happens to my existing sol sub-registrars and its subdomains?

Your existing .sol sub-registrar will become a .sns sub-registrar, with all existing configurations and functionality remaining intact.

As the sub-registrar owner, you'll receive the matching new .sol domain as a regular domain — note that sub-registrars themselves are not supported by new .sol domains at launch.

Subdomains remain linked to the .sns parent domain — for example, sub.parent.sol will resolve as sub.parent.sns. However, subdomains are not eligible for a matching new .sol subdomain.

32. What happens to my sol.site page?

Your sol.site page will remain available in the near term. It will be retired before new .sol domains are activated during the final phrase of the upgrade (Q4 2026 - Q1 2027).

We will share further details about the sol.site retirement timeline in advance through our official channels.

33. Could I lose my domain during the upgrade?

The upgrade is designed so that you do not lose your domain. Your domain stays in your wallet throughout and continues as a .sns domain, with its configurations and functionality intact.

The upgraded .sol domain will be delivered automatically to wallets included in the snapshot.

The main risk during any upgrade is scams. Use only official channels, and never share your seed phrase.

If anything looks wrong with your domain, contact support through the official channels. See “Where do I get help?”

34. I've lost access to the wallet holding my domain. Is there anything that can be done?

Domains are self-custodied. Only the wallet holder has control over them via their seed phrase. We have no ability to access, recover, or transfer a domain out of a wallet we do not control.

If you still have your seed phrase, you can restore the wallet and your domain will be there. If the seed phrase is permanently lost, the domain remains in that wallet. Any matching new .sol domain is delivered to the wallet holding the domain at the snapshot, whether or not you can reach it.

Security and Support

35. How can I avoid scams during the domain transition?

Scammers may impersonate us or create fake claim websites during the transition. There is no claim process for eligible domains.

We will never:

• Contact you first through a direct message
• Ask for your seed phrase
• Ask you to send funds to receive your domain

Before connecting your wallet, verify every link through our official channels. If something seems suspicious, do not connect your wallet or share any information.

Support replies will only ever come through those two official channels — never via DM. If someone contacts you privately claiming to offer help, treat it as a scam attempt.
